Week 4

If you were given a chance to re-organize schools in ways that made sense in the 21st century how would you do it? What would you keep and what would you get rid of? How would you make schools more reflective of a diverse student body with myriad and changing needs?

As a mother of a child who is currently in elementary school I see several issues with the way that the school system is set up. If I could make changes with no strings attached, just “poof” make it happen there would be several things I would do.

The first thing would be to make all school districts on an even playing field. I would supply the inner city schools with the same materials as the schools in the richer school districts. Technology is a big deal at this point of time. Most of my sons state testing is done on computers, there are some schools that don’t have enough updates computers to keep up. I believe there should be several different ways that children can be tested based on their needs. I also believe that there are multiple different ways children can research a subject that doesn’t include technology. However, this world is a fast paced world and technology is incredibly important aspect of it. If we don’t provide the children with access to learn how to be successful with technology, they can be left behind. One job of schools is to prepare kids after they leave to be successful, so if all school districts were on the same level, it would increase the amount of children that are ready for the real world.

The second thing would be regrouping the children to accommodate them based more on their education level. Right now it is based on grade level and then there is small sub groups with in their grade for children who are higher or lower in skill set. I’m not 100 percent sure how regrouping would work. My son is showing signs of being placed in the gifted program with in his school district. However, the program doesn’t start until he reaches the third grade and he currently just finished first. So until he reaches this point, it is on the teachers to find ways to challenge him and keep him “busy” while the other children are doing their work. If we could find a way to regroup to take some stress off the teachers this would be amazing. It can also be beneficial for the children, if we regroup them to be placed more on their level with other children. They can all interact and challenge one another. Even if this means grouping children of multiple ages together. Having experience working with Headstart where we group twenty kids from the ages of three, four and five years old together it can work.
