Week 4 Review

If you were given a chance to re-organize schools in ways that made sense in the 21st century how would you do it? What would you keep and what would you get rid of? How would you make schools more reflective of a diverse student body with myriad and changing needs?

If I could reorganize schools to better reflect the 21st century, I would re-evaluate the cirriculum especially the high school level. I feel I have heard this on multiple different platforms, but I believe it would be beneficial for high school students to be taught, "real world skills" in school. This could include filing taxes, accounting, budgeting, automobile maintenance, first aid, insurance, and even stress management. I am only speaking for myself as some schools may touch on these subjects, but mine did not. While I did go to college right after high school, as I found myself in the real world there were often times were I would think, "I wish I learned this in school".

Courses should be monitored according to the students needs, for example, Coates mentioned getting no use out of French-- I believe a class better catered to the students needs would be much more beneficial than this general education requirement-- even something like first aid would probably be more beneficial to the kids in chicago as opposed to a European language.

I honestly could not tell you half the things I learned in high school, but I think that would be different if I had actually learned about things I would use in the real world.
