Week 3 Reflection - Maria Brown

How do you envision Internet technologies affecting education in the next twenty years and are you happy about that?

Internet technologies will take a more prominent role in education.  We are already starting to see this in classrooms utilizing blackboard and other platforms for posting assignments, homework, and collaborations among students.  We will definitely start to see more integration of cell phones and continued integration of ipads and laptop computers.  Some schools even loan out computers to students for the year already.  Paper and pencil will become a thing of the past for the most part as we start to see the transition over to more technology.  Even math can be done on touch screen tablets where teachers will be able to see your work and thought process.

In the book Alone Together, Turkle talks about how this generation is tethered to phones.  It is nearly impossible to try to ignore the strong pull technology has on this generation.  Therefore I am positive we will start to see more integration of cell phones in the classroom.  I think there is a way to do this and to ensure that the students remain engaged with the assignment.  My hope is that software will be made in the future that enables students to be on their phones to get assignments done but not switch over to other apps, kind of like the technology that exists (though not perfect) with testing software.
