Week 3 Reflection

How do you envision Internet technologies affecting education in the next twenty years and are you happy about that?

I think that internet technologies may afford us some positive outcomes in education for the near future as well as many negatives we may not know for a while. I think that there may be more options to do a blended education with some in school and some at home/online. I’m not sure this will be in every school or public school due to funding but, maybe if the youth has the means to do so they may start with electives. Hopefully this doesn’t push those in public schools behind those that have the ability to participate in online learning. I think the benefit of this would be to have collaborations with peers from around the world. They could create societal drive projects to impact global changes and this could benefit everyone. I don’t think we do enough now in education to work on real world issues. May be this could help us to learn about others at a young age creating more empathy. We won’t be separated by race or socioeconomic status, etc. If this is the case then hopefully debate and discussion would be encouraged to create a deeper involvement with the material. This could lead to new types of learning with more self-direction. I would think at a young age there will be more game based learning furthering advancements in visual learning and possibly simulators. I think this could make history for instance more interesting to feel like you are there and physically “seeing” events occur in what feels like real time. These memorable events would help the information stick. With computers and technology being used more I think there will be more algorithms used for grading based on how you are doing. This could be great for personal instruction and moving people along at their own pace without so many exams potentially decreasing things like test taking anxiety. I often think that if students had the ability to learn at their own pace then they would feel more empowered and this could help the comparison society that we currently are involved in. Eventually this could lead to higher academic standards as well. I think that teachers may eventually (probably further away than 20 years) end up being more like facilitators for feedback than doing the literal teaching. This could do wonders in taking things like the hidden curriculums out of the equation but, I also fear all of this is just hurting us more socially. If these things do come to fruition then we will only have more screen time and be less social. Part of school means that you learn societal norms and I think this piece would be missing from online learning. I also worry that because so much information is out there, we will only look to black and white answers without encouraging creativity or students would only look for the answers and lose the thought behind it. School today is already hindering creativity. I also worry about over stimulation and more problems with attention neurologically. I hope that this wouldn’t mean physical play is also gone. I think there is a way we can use devices for physical education but, I’m not sure these activities will empower kids to go out after school. This socialization with peers is vital and I’m not sure we can really get this behind a screen. I also worry that this will create more distance between generations if we continue to focus on the short comings of technology. In order to get a head of it I fear that we must cautiously embrace it and change it to a way that makes sense for our future. As you can see there are many things to potentially be happy about but many to be of the utmost concern.
