Week 2 Reflection Alexis Baker

Prompt:

Is being an adolescent mostly the same as it has always been or has it changed dramatically. What would Eriskon say to this question and why? How do you think Erikson say we should change as teachers, if we should at all?

I think that being and adolescent has changed over the course of time. However, there are still many similarities throughout the course of history. Adolescents always want to rebel and parents will got frustrated with them; that has never changed. I think the ways that the rebel are much different know than in previous times. The reason for this, I believe, is technology. Technology is the main reason that adolescent life is slightly different than previous times. Kids are literally connected in a matter of seconds. This can lead to many more pressures and comparisons for these adolescents, which does not help with rebelling or their own identity. They can never "get away" from a part of their life because social media and technology is always by their side.

I think Erikson would say that adolescents are pretty much the same throughout time. In this book he predicted almost exactly what was going to happen to the world/adolescents. He would say that adolescents haven't changed but the things around them have through time. And we, as the adults need to figure out how we can make this big "problem go away."

Which leads to what as we, teachers, should do to better help these adolescents. I believe that first their needs to be an open classroom, less competition and more exaggeration on the idea of knowledge not test scores. I also think that with these technological changes the classroom needs to become up to date so students do not get bored. They like the screen time and can't get away from it. So as teachers, use that screen time as productive/learning time while still keeping the kids engaged. They are away from the chalkboard time, so teachers have to be in the time of their students.
