Week 1 Reflection

What role should high schools have, or should they take a role, in adolescents struggles with negative identity formation (rebellion)? Or should they only concentrate on positive identity formation?

Adolescents will deal with negative identity formation in their lives. I believe that in schools, as a future School Psychologist, we have a duty to promote a positive school climate. High schools should make efforts in implementing Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) in the form of RTI (Response to Intervention) or PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports)  to promote positive behavior in schools and they should carry it out with integrity. The state of Ohio has made it mandatory that schools implement PBIS in the upcoming school year, which is a great step, but I worry that without proper training and integrity measures, that administration and teachers will become overwhelmed.

By implementing a MTSS program, schools focus on positive identity formation by using positively stated goals, and rewarding students for appropriate behavior, decreasing the likelihood of negative behavior. The basis of these systems are psychological in nature and evidence- based. With my experiences in schools, I've seen that without support for teachers and staff, implementation is usually poor and teachers feel like its another thing added to their plate.High schools should take a role seeing as kids spend a majority of their day in school, but without supports, I fear a focus on identity formation would take a backseat.
