Week 1 popular media review

Okay, so the movie I am going to mention is an old movie, and I DO NOT recommend watching it (I would not watch this today- way too many triggers for various different negative behaviors). However, it depicts very well negative identity formation experienced by many adolescents. The movie is called "13," and tells the story of a 13 year old girl who starts off as unpopular, and in a quest to be popular and find identity, finds herself in a mess of a life using drugs, alcohol, and various other things I won't mention. The change in her life is so drastic, basically overnight, as she completely takes on a new identity- one that her new popular friend basically imposes on her. What I thought was interesting is how the girl did not hesitate to take part in all sorts of risky behaviors after she rebelled and took on a new identity. I think this is because she actually completely took on a new identity- an identity that was willing to engage in such behaviors. This is in contrast, with not taking on an entirely new identity, but just sprinkling in some out of the ordinary behaviors (according to the person) here and there. That is why I think the rebellion can actually be very dangerous and harmful, because it can go too far. I thought this was a good example of when negative identity formation goes too far, as I have often seen in the people in my life.
