Week 1 Popular Media Review - by Maria Brown

So, Pretty Little Liars is a tv show based around the lives of this group of teen girls in high school trying to solve a mystery.  A character in particular, Mona, is one that is reminiscent of a student with negative identity formation.  This is a bit dramatic of an example, but in season 7 episode 16, she kills a different character (Charlotte).  For a better part of the show, she is seen as a bully to the four main characters.

On the other hand, Spencer is clearly an example of positive identity formation.  She is the straight-A, goody two-shoes, never gets in trouble, going to an Ivy League character.

It is clear in classroom scenes that Spencer is overtly favored over Mona.  Mona shows up to classes late, she gets teachers names wrong, etc. while Spencer gets good grades, she's seated and prepared in her seat before the bell rings, and the teachers clearly have a preference for her.

Although this is a very dramatized ridiculous tv show following these four teens (who apparently learned to drive at 14 years old and are involved in a murderous scheme throughout high school....and yes...I watched the whole series because it really keeps you coming back for more! *I'm ashamed*) I think it does highlight that teachers have preference and give more attention to the students who are "good" and perform well over the student that is rebellious and likely needs a little extra attention and help.
