Week 2 Reflection

Is being an adolescent mostly the same as it has always been or has it changed dramatically. What would Eriskon say to this question and why? How do you think Erikson say we should change as teachers, if we should at all?

I do not believe being an adolescent is mostly the same as it has always been, but no different in the way that being an adult is not the same as it has always been. With the development of new technology, life has been altered from previous decades in the way in which people live their lives.

With adolescents, technology usage has become a part of them identifying who they are. Cell phones specifically have altered what it means to be an adolescent because kids can now connect with each other, (or anyone else in the world with a cellphone), in a matter of seconds. Therefore even when kids are together and hanging out, they are on their cellphones or playing a game online or using some form of technology together. This however does not differ from past generations of children. New technology always has and always will continue to develop. Adults struggled to understand the technology their children used even before the cell phone became glued to peoples hands.

I think in a general sense, adolescents are the same as Erikson's adolescents, just with an added complexity because of the mass use of cell phones. Erik son predicted this change and as adults and teachers we need to learn and grow with technology in order to better understand our adolescents and help shape them into members of society.
